Shalimar Luis was born and raised in North Bergen, NJ. She earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, majoring in Graphic Design. As an Associate Creative Director with twelve years experience, she specializes in branding and product design and has done work for international brands such as Apple, American Express, and Amazon.
Her success as a designer has given Shalimar the stability and freedom to explore art outside of the commercial arena. The subject matter explored in her work has ranged from portraits of real and imagined people to landscapes of alien worlds. Being self-taught, she experiments with mediums and techniques as part of her process. Her recent work has moved deeper into the abstract, with a focus on composition and color, employing the automatic method of creating art; improvisation and discovery. She allows the unconscious mind to lead and follows through on those decisions with improvisation, yielding an image previously unknown and unimagined.
Shalimar is currently building a new body of work using these methods, increasing scale and pushing subject matter further, with the ultimate goal of a solo show. Sharing her work mostly online, she has exhibited in a handful of group shows around New Jersey, including LITM in Jersey City, and is looking to get involved in more group shows.

My time at SVA was some of the most challenging and fulfilling time in my life. I miss college… but I don't miss homework.
